Internet Insights

Here at the Internet Society, we believe that the Internet is for everyone. Our work centers on increasing the Internet’s reach, reliability and resilience, as well as ensuring that the network of networks remains open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy. But how do we assess whether our efforts – and the efforts of the global ecosystem of organizations that facilitate the smooth functioning of the Internet – are working?

There are many people, projects and organizations that are collecting data on various facets of the Internet, but there’s no single site that provides a curated set of insights. So, to help everyone gain deeper, data-driven insight into the Internet, the Internet Society is building a tool that consolidates trusted third-party Internet measurement data from various sources into a single platform – Insights.internetsociety.org

We’ll use the data presented on the Insights platform to examine Internet trends, generate reports, and tell data-driven stories so that policymakers, researchers, journalists, network operators, civil society groups and others can better understand the health, availability and evolution of the Internet.

About

What is the Insights platform?

The Insights platform is a website being built by the Internet Society’s Measuring the Internet project. Insights consolidates trusted, third-party Internet measurement data from various sources into a single platform. We’ll use this data to examine trends, generate reports, and tell data-driven stories and encourage others to do the same.

Why is the Internet Society building the Insights platform?

Much of the Internet Society’s work centers on increasing the Internet’s reach, reliability and resilience, as well as ensuring that the network of networks remains open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy. But how do we assess whether our efforts – and the efforts of the global ecosystem of organizations that facilitate the smooth functioning of the Internet – are working? How can we see where protocols, such as IPv6, are being deployed and at what rate so we can better understand where more education on the benefits of such technologies might be helpful? And where can policy makers find a comprehensive set of data from various sources to help show decision makers the local impact of Internet shutdowns? To help answer these questions, we’re building a website that consolidates trusted, third-party Internet measurement data from various sources into a single platform.

There are many organizations collecting data on various aspects of the Internet. How will the Insights platform be different?

There are many people, projects and organizations that are collecting data on various facets of the Internet, but there’s no single site that provides a curated set of information and in-depth insight in one place. Insights will collate important data on Internet measurements and will make it available through a single easy-to-use platform.

Where does the data that is included on the Insights platform come from?

Our data comes from trusted third party organizations. Please see the Data Sources section below for more information on the data curated by the Insights platform and the organizations that collect it.

Will the Internet Society be performing measurements or collecting data itself?

No, the Internet Society will not perform any measurements or collect any data itself. Instead we will use data from trusted third party organizations. Our data sources are listed in the Data Sources section below.

Who can use the Insights platform?

Insights will be available to everyone, everywhere so that policymakers, researchers, journalists, network operators, civil society groups and others can better understand the health, availability and evolution of the Internet.

Which aspects of Internet measurement is the Insights platform focusing on?

We will launch Insights with an initial focus on two key areas: Internet Shutdowns and Enabling Technologies.

The data we’ll present on Internet Shutdowns will help to establish a framework for measuring the frequency, duration, and network reach of Internet shutdowns, with accompanying analysis and reporting. We’ll also crowdsource first-hand accounts and insights from the local community to explore how the shutdown is affecting local populations.

Enabling Technologies are essential for enabling the Internet to keep growing and evolving to meet the changing needs and expectations of users. We’ll identify these technologies, why they’re important for the future of the Internet and track their adoption across networks and countries. Technologies that contribute to improving Internet scalability, security, trust and availability (including IPv6, HTTPS, DNSSEC, TLS 1.3, and HTTP/3) will be our focus.

When will the Insights platform be available?

We plan to launch Insights before the end of 2020.
