Here at the Internet Society, we believe that the Internet is for everyone. Our work centers on increasing the Internet’s reach, reliability and resilience, as well as ensuring that the Internet remains open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy. But how do we assess whether our efforts – and the efforts of other Internet Industry organizations that facilitate the smooth functioning of the Internet – are working?
There are many people, projects and organizations that are collecting data on various facets of the Internet, but there’s currently no single site that provides a curated set of insights. So, to help everyone gain deeper, data-driven insight into the Internet, we’re building Internet Insights.
How Insights Works
Launched in December 2020, Insights consolidates trusted third-party Internet measurement data from various sources into a single platform. We use the data presented here to examine Internet trends and tell data-driven stories so that policymakers, researchers, journalists, network operators, civil society groups and others can better understand the health, availability and evolution of the Internet. We encourage everyone who is interested in Internet evolution to use, analyze and share the data presented on Insights in their work and research
Insights is a continually evolving initiative and additional data sources and focus areas will be added as new partners contribute to our efforts. Internet Resilience and the Internet Way of Networking (IWN) will be key focus areas for 2021.
- Helps everyone better understand the rate of adoption of key new and enabling Internet technologies, helping to identify where more efforts are needed to drive increased adoption.
- Enables journalists to leverage the statistics, data, and graphics to support coverage of relevant Internet-related topics and events.
- Gives policymakers relevant statistics, data, and context to support their positions and/or influence policy development, especially around Internet shutdowns and local infrastructure resiliency.
- Gives civil society, network operations, and Internet users insight into the availability, resilience and reliability of local and global Internet infrastructure
